18 Aug, 2019 A conversation with our psychologist Jessica Levetan about her work and the influences that have shaped her treatment approach.
Can you tell me how you decided to make a profession out of psychology and what has been your professional journey so far? My professional journey started at a young age. As a child, I loved literature and was fascinated by other people’s stories and experiences. I have also always had a strong commitment to social justice and spent many of my adolescent years volunteering in local communities in my home country of South Africa. I served as a mentor for young girls in residential youth care centers and spent time abroad running programs on conflict resolution for adolescent migrants. I returned home and began a degree in Medicine, but soon found that I was yearning for more personal connection in my work. I transferred to a degree in psychology, and later moved to Australia to finish my studies.
Over the years, I have served as a counselor for woman and children affected by domestic violence, a school psychologist, and a perinatal psychologist in a family medical centre. Private practice has afforded me the wonderful opportunity to create meaningful relationships with my clients, and to be a part of their journey towards health and recovery.
What are some particular areas of interest in your practice? Much of my work centers on supporting children and teens to manage worries and fears, overcome social, learning and behavioural challenges, and improve communication and connection with parents. I also support young adults to forge satisfying relationships, cope with anxiety and perfectionism, work through grief and loss, and build body confidence, assertiveness, and self-worth.
I adopt a holistic approach to therapy and enjoy working closely with entire families. I believe in providing consistent, compassionate and individualized care.
What are some important lessons you have learned through experience that were not part of your formal academic study? I have learned that relationships are integral to well-being and should not be taken for granted. I have also learned that individuals can achieve incredible feats and overcome tremendous challenges when they have confidence and self-worth.
What do you love about being a therapist? I feel privileged to bear witness to the personal stories of my clients, and have learned a lot about resilience, compassion and forgiveness through this work. I love observing the progress my clients make towards overcoming obstacles, achieving their goals, and finding fulfillment. I enjoy being creative and also love to read and learn about new theories and approaches.
What is a common misconception that clients have that you wish you could change? Commencing counselling can be a daunting process for many, and it can be hard to open up to someone unfamiliar. However, most of my clients adjust very quickly to the process. While therapy may be challenging, it can also be filled with fun, joy and laughter! I strongly believe in a collaborative process, and my clients always have a voice and a say in their treatment.
What interests and hobbies do you have outside of the area of psychology? I love music, and enjoy playing the piano, dancing, and going to performances and concerts. I also have an interest in art and travel, and enjoy going to exhibitions, markets and new places. I have a big sweet tooth and will never say no to dessert after dinner. I am a big animal lover, and can relax and unwind when spending time with my dog, Louis. In fact, Louis will be completing some training at the end of the year to become a certified therapy dog!
